“Jolene” / A picture of you, holding a picture of me, in the pocket of my blue jeans. I still don’t know what love means.

Ray LaMontagne, TROUBLE

Beautiful.  Need to learn this one on my uke but not sure if I could do it justice!

OH MY GOD.

I’ve been saying that someone needed to write a history of Riot Grrrl for a minute now (as the kids say these days). Good to see that someone has.

I’m going to own this as soon as it is humanly possible.

I’m going to have a brief “great stuff people are doing” day real quick. So: yeah! Sara Marcus is great: smart and awesome. There’s a copy of this book somewhere in my house, and while I haven’t gotten time to start reading yet, it’s getting really impressive reviews, and on my first browse through I was seriously wowed by the amount of work and research and care she put into it. Kinda staggeringly impressed. And it should be equally of interest whether you’re interested in the music part of things, the activism side of things, or just want to read a story about how something awesome and inspiring happening.

I think I said, a few months ago, that I remembered a time when it seemed like a lot of great writers were getting started with tackling this era, from a lot of different angles — if all the different results look as good as this one does, we’ll be in for a treat.

I’m adding this to my ‘to read’ list!

I was given Kiwi Ukulele: the New Zealand Ukukele Companion for my birthday and finally purchased a ukulele this week.  I’m not a big ukulele fan but have been pleased by how quickly I could pick it up and play (read: mangle) Pokarekare Ana so watch this space.  It’s been a long time since I’ve played an instrument but the uke could be just the thing to get me back into playing some music.

Matt’s video from last night’s Pixies gig at the Powerstation. Epic.

Muxtape is relaunching as a service exclusively for bands… The industry will catch up some day, it pretty much has to.
Muxtape is gone as we knew it; hopefully it can become something even better with the new focus on bands rather than mixes.  I do wish the music industry would catch up, even if there still has to be insane copyrights etc (insert gratuitous plug for Creative Commons).  Mixtapes are awesome.

Fur Patrol on tour

Oh yes oh yes oh yes oh yes!

A perfect band to buy tickets for on the aftermath of elation from the Breeders on Friday.

They’re only $15 and playing at the Dogs Bollix on August 30, so there is really no excuse to miss this!

live music > the breeders

we go and see a bit of live music - not as much as we used to but still a fair bit.   bands fall into one of two categories - bands i totally love or seeing bands i know of and have decided to take the opportunity to see live.  it’s awesome either way most of the time.

we went to see the breeders play at the bruce mason centre on friday night.  i have always really liked the breeders, though they don’t fall into the top ten bands of all time. i thought it would be on par with seeing sonic youth and the cure - watching a band who have achieved greatness that you never thought would tour again.

i was absolutely blown away.  i always try to take a lot of photos to remember and commemorate these shows - i didn’t have my camera and the shot here is just off my iphone - but no photo or video could have captured the elation of being at that concert.   crowds in auckland don’t move much at shows but for the breeders, i danced so much i have whiplash and incredibly sore muscles.

the breeders are a tight band who don’t appear to have any airs or graces or bullshit - they just got up and played, and they rocked.  they talked a little bit to the crowd, but not so much or little that it was disappointing (i always hate it when bands don’t even say hi, cf: interpol, cat power etc).

they have set the bar for live show awesomeness for MONTHS to come. that gig reminded me why live music is so important and special.  it changes your life!

and i say thank you for the music…

etc etc.

dirty secret: i love abba.

just got back from ‘mamma mia’.  as expected, loved it far too much including pierce brosnan’s terribly earnest singing, meryl streep (full stop), the humour, and the abba-ness of it all.

(now it’s on the internet you can’t hold my dirty secret over me ANY MORE!)
