This year’s 48 hour film competition was very different from last year’s - we went almost in the opposite direction with a team of 3 and a lot of constraints that helped us keep our story and goal direct - this included using minimal equipment and props as well as shooting on my iPhone 4.

Our writing process was really straightforward and the simplicity continued for the whole weekend:

  • Friday night - we brainstormed and came up with our synopsis including a breakdown of key plot points we needed to cover
  • Saturday morning - gathered additional props, sorted costumes, set and did some camera/sound tests
  • Saturday afternoon - shooting
  • Saturday evening - export, couple of sound pick-ups, editing
  • Sunday - editing - complete by late afternoon

My main involvement - and really the only thing I really like about the process - is the writing part.  I like the constraints/idea starters of the competition and my team were awesome to talk things through with.  We didn’t script it line by line which worked well because both Tineke and I had experience from improv working that way.  We had a three pager to work off when we were shooting and as needed, I worked through key statements our heroine had to say and had a couple of small ‘cheat sheets’ that T. would stick on the wall or just out of camera to remind her if she needed.

We’re really happy with what we created - it came second in our heat - and we’re ready to kill it next year!

the first annual nzff club

(and may be extended to other film festivals, who knows?)

the aim of the group is to actually see more than 1 film festival movie and not have to cast around madly for someone to see it with.  i doubt i can actually get to all the below so  register interest or suggest other films by emailing me  (if you don’t know my email address, you definitely can’t be in the club).

these are the movies i have picked out so far.  i got a bit bored reading through the programme as it went on so may have missed some - suggestions welcome.  this is only a first cut.  i am definitely open to other films and pretty much made some harsh choices due to the growing list which i am likely to be happy to revise.

sessions are also changeable though i do really like the lido as a venue and hate going near skycity - not to mention parking in town sucks and can be really stupid.

the final list as based on consensus and personal wants will be available as a shared google calendar or something.  stay tuned (also i can’t believe in this DAY AND AGE that you can’t export your schedule as SOMETHING from this website.  there has been enough ranting about this website today though from others as well as myself so let’s leave it at: one of the worst festival websites i’ve ever seen).

so…hit me back.
